Nelson Thornes

"Working with Can has proved to be an enjoyable and valuable experience. We have found their approach to be innovative, creative and highly communicative. Can worked extensively with us both prior to, and during, construction of the software to develop our original idea into a highly sophisticated and innovative product.
They maintained open lines of communication at all stages of the process, and did not fail to pass on (and explain where necessary) the good and the bad, as well as acting pre-emptively to provide solutions to any problems that were encountered. They provided us with creative solutions to the issues that our content sometimes posed and also fed back invaluable information that enabled us to develop our content as well as the software. In conclusion, we would not hesitate to use their services again in the future."

This is subscription-based web site linking with Nelson Thornes' print resources for the Applied GCSE double awards, and integrating with Nelson Thornes' existing user records system.

The site serves three main purposes:

  1. a content repository/reference bank for case study information on organisations
  2. a "portfolio-builder", providing functionality that would enable students to create and organise documents for the part of the course assessed by the portfolio
  3. a repository of templates for standard documents that students may need to use within their portfolios

The site covers the following subjects:

  • Business
  • ICT
  • Health and Social Care
  • Leisure and Tourism

The site provides a content repository/reference bank for case study information on organisations, a "portfolio-builder" providing functionality that enables students to create and organise documents and a repository of templates for standard documents that students may need to use within their portfolios

The content is of the site is all managed by a bespoke CMS solution providing page template to the publishers content experts who update and extend the site on a yearly basis. The content provides direct links to the websites of all organisations featured so that the student can conduct further research as they develop their portfolio. Case study content is structured to support lower-ability students and stretch higher ability students.

A unique file management system enables students to create their own individual reference banks comprising content from the case studies provided. Students can also upload, create and manage their own portfolio documents within the same area.

A Teacher Centre allows staff to monitor students' progress and the Task Tracker tool enables students to list their assignments and deadlines for completion. Staff may enter feedback on any piece of work. Mark schemes for AQA, OCR and Edexcel are provided.
